Excuse Me

I know, I'm not supposed to get excited. I'm not supposed to be impressed with what I see. I'm supposed to look at the product on the field and find something I don't like about the Orioles. I know what I'm supposed to do, but I'm a fan.

Just when you think this team is ready to "tank it," they defy what we've come to know about the Orioles and win a couple of games. Just when you think the old Daniel Cabrera is back, he goes out and pitches a gem, like last night. That was just what the doctor ordered for a very tired bullpen.

Okay, it was the Royals. Okay, it's only two in a row. Okay, they're only three games over .500. I know everything negative that can be said about what's going on at Camden Yards this year, but when did we stop ALLOWING ourselves to have fun?

In fact, we are just as guilty as the athletes when it comes to having fun. Sometimes we get so caught up in the business of what's going on that we forget to enjoy the game.

Well, last night was fun. In fact, I've had fun more often than not this baseball season. It's been fun to just watch.

So, with football season being just weeks away, let's manage to do what other good sports cities do: let's cheer for the home team(s).

Good perspective check, Rob. I think we're all waiting for that 5-35 streak to start, because that's what's happened every time we've gotten a glimmer of hope in the past 10 years. But you gotta live in the moment, and for the moment, this is a REALLY fun team to watch. I'm even excited about the fact that guys who aren't part of the future (Huff, Millar, Payton, and maybe Sherrill, Roberts, and Hernandez) are showing solid value coming into the trade deadline. If MacPhail does a better job as a seller than Syd Thrift did, I'd like to think this time next year, we could actually be a respectable team with alot of players who really ARE part of the future.

Rob-Could not agree more. If you had told me back on March 31, that on July 3 we'd be above .500, I'd have bought you another beer, cause obviously you'd have been drinking. The O's are fun to watch this summer....they're hustling, and actually look like they're enjoying themselves. How long has it been since we could say that? They're making slow and steady progress, and that's all we could have asked for this year. Let's hope our purple birds come out of the gate with as much "piss and vinegar" as the O's seem to have. (Regretfully....I'm not counting on it...but we'll see.)

Amen. The times they are a changing!

Re: Excuse Me    By Nick on 7/3/2008 10:27 AM

Rob, let me start by saying I am no fan of yours, but I definitely agree (for once) with your blog. And I hate the Ravens, so "Lets go O's"..

Re: Excuse Me    By Tyler on 7/3/2008 10:27 AM

Good blog Rob. I agree. I dont understand some of these fans who keep telling me not to get excited that "they arent going to do anything this year" I dont care what the end result is this year but I do care about the effort on the field. This is a very entertaining baseball team right now. The somehow manage to stay in every ball game and give you your moneys worth every night. Thats all we can ask for as fans.

Re: Excuse Me    By rob on 7/3/2008 10:28 AM

Nick. Thank you. I think. Ha ha ha. Have a happy 4th.

Re: Excuse Me    By Johnny Rocket on 7/4/2008 10:18 AM

It is just nice to be able to put the game on the TV and actually watch it for a change. In past years, I would click to the game, see that the O's were losing and click back to another game or show. I think that this time, the organization is really making strides to get them back into contention in the AL East. If the Rays can do it, why not us? Have a great 4th and keep the Coors Light's cold!

NOT playing meaningful games in September , that's what I don't like,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,how can you get excited about not making the playoffs for ten years running , I need more than this to get excited about..................<br>

Re: Excuse Me    By griffey3 on 7/5/2008 7:31 AM

Hey Rob Iagree 100% with what you say but let me ask you this. Here we are in the first week of july and the O's are 9 back of Tampa. We can probably think that Tampa will falter at some point, at least a little bit. So let me ask you, at what point do we as fans change our mindset from being really happy to just watching a fun season to thinking, Hey we might have a chance to win this whole damn thing! Or do you think that is completely out of the question?
