Friday Fun...

Just a heads up for what's in store on Friday, since it might require you to do a little thinking between now and 6:00 am.

Not quite sure how this became "topic week", but it's fun and it's been really cool to hear from a lot of self-admitted "first time callers".

Tomorrow, as always, we'll have a Friday Featured Artist to supply the music (going back of the rack...) and our topic will be: The most overblown sports stories ever.

Start thinking about things that have happened in the world of sports that were completely overblown, either by the media (imagine that...) or the participants/individuals themselves.

I have three good ones to offer.

We'll talk O's/Nationals, as the Birds head to D.C. to win Friday and Saturday before losing, of course, on Sunday.

I've received several e-mails from listeners and blog readers today encouraging me to suspend the "comment" privileges of someone who refers to himself as Ira Silverstein. I'm taking those suggestions and recommendations under advisement.

Last but not least, it was good to finally have a hotly contested King of Baltimore Sports match-up today. I checked about an hour ago and Mike Cuellar was beating Ed Reed 54% to 46%. I voted for Cuellar.

I say ban both Silverstein and Johnny Rocket. They might be

the same guy anyway right? Ban 'em both.

Re: Friday Fun... By Johnny Rocket on 6/27/2008 8:29 AM

The most overblown sports related story in this city is the 2000 Super Bowl(*) won by the Ravens. Eight years later the people in this town who only see life through purple and black glasses still bring up the players, the game and the team. Get over it people, it was almost a decade ago! And just for the record, I would bet anyone who reads this, that the Redskins will win their next Super Bowl before the Ravens do!

Re: Friday Fun... By Ira Silverstein on 6/27/2008 8:40 AM

Well, it's not really a true comment section if you have the right to filter comments. I mean vulgar language I can understand, but when you open the floor on controversial topics you gotta be able to take the heat. What's that thing about making your bed?....(DF: Dude, let's cut to the chase for a minute. It's just you and I. You don't add anything to the discussion, ever, which is the biggest complaint I'm getting about you from the listeners/readers (and I have to "let the people speak"...). You just stir the s**t and nothing more and if that's what your intentions are, that's cool. But at some point, you have to ADD something to these controversial topics you talk about. We did overrated, underrated, fixing sports, etc., and you added ZERO to the discussion. If you add something intelligent to the blogs, you can also sprinkle in your agenda against me and the station and it will at least be a tad more tolerable. But EVERYTHING from you is just bulls**t negativity. And, that's what the folks are tired of... If you're looking to let everyone out there know that you don't like me or the station, I think you've made that point clear but I'll do it again for you, one last time, in the event I do follow through and suspend you as many are requesting I do. EVERYONE, LISTEN UP!!!! - Someone who goes by the name of Ira Silverstein doesn't like Drew or WNST. There you go, bro. Lastly, unlike your employer, the Orioles, who don't respond to me, I respond to you. Tell Greg Bader I said "hi".)

Re: Friday Fun... By Nundrum on 6/27/2008 8:41 AM

I say let Ira keep posting. He's the only one in the Orioles organization allowed to communicate with WNST. (oops -- did I say that out loud?)

Re: Friday Fun... By Ed From Park Heights on 6/27/2008 8:46 AM

do us all a really big favor and don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out. the redskins, owned by the Danny (thats Mr. Snyder to you) are a joke. The stadium sucks. And their fans belong listening to Washington radio stations. We neither want, not need to hear old wannabe lax players cheering for a team run by an a$$hole, previously run by the guy who did his best to keep football from coming back to baltimore. take the rocket out of your pocket and fly it to the Kennedy Center. Maybe they'll give you a part as the warthog in the Lion King.

Re: Friday Fun... By WeaverBeliever on 6/27/2008 8:42 AM

For what it's worth, I think ira Silverstein should NOT be banned. First of all, it's free speech, but more important is that posting his comments allows the entire world wide web to see how much of an asshe is. If he wants to make such an ignorant ass out of himself and look like an idiot, WNST shouldn't stand in his way at all. One sports "story" I thought was overblown was Fuzzy Zeller's infamous "fried chicken" commemnts. It was a joke and one that any black celebrety would have gotten away with, and people would have thought it was funny. But the media blew it way out of proportion, kept the story running far much longer than it needed to, and it allowed the sensitivity police way too much air time to lecture us all on race relations.

Re: Friday Fun... By Philly Bill on 6/27/2008 8:59 AM

Drew, I'm one of the people who emailed you and asked you to kick Ira off the blog because I'm sick and tired of reading his responses on every single entry he provides.
I really liked your response to him. It's evident everytime he writes something that he doesn't like you and it was good that you admitted that and exposed that.
I will once again ask you, this time publicy, to delete anything he submits to these blogs. Your website is too good to have people like him ruin it for people like me and others who enjoy reading everything here. (DF: Thanks for the note...you know the old saying, "one bad apple..." I'll take your request under advisement.)

Re: Friday Fun... By CBR on 6/27/2008 9:01 AM

Drew, get rid of Ira Silverstein and Johnny Rocket, please. Who do I need to ask, Nestor? Who controls that? Please, get rid of those two clowns. (DF: Johnny Rocket is a Redskins fan and is obviously anti-Baltimore but he occasionally adds something of substance to the discussion. Not often, mind you, but often enough to stay in MY good graces, anyway.)

Re: Friday Fun... By Johnny Rocket on 6/27/2008 10:02 AM

Drew, thanks for the back-up. I do not just try to "stir the pot". I am, as you know, a 'Skins fan, but I also happen to be a huge Orioles fan. My father had Colts season tickets when I was kid, and I went to a lot of football games on 33rd Street, but I always loved the the 'Skins. The Orioles have always been my baseball team. I was at the Series in '79 and '83 and playoffs in the '90's. I think that it is great that the Orioles are on somewhat of the right track. It has been 10 years since I can walk into my office and someone will say, "Did you see the O's game last night?" It's great! Now here is another overblown sports story...How about "Swollen Colin", Jose and the rest of the Euro's at the 1999 Ryder Cup Press Conference after Justin Leonard made the 45-footer on 17 to win the Cup at Brookline. At every Ryder Cup since, you still hear the Euro's complaining about how the "Yanks" were acting, etc. I guess they forgot all those years that Seve and "Swollen Colin" were stirring the pot!
(DF: I don't know how much "back-up" I gave you. You're over-the-line most times with your shameless criticism of the Ravens, but every blogger needs a lunatic who riles up the natives occasionally and you seem to enjoy the role of saying dumb, enraging stuff about Baltimore, so I let you blabber on.)

Re: Friday Fun... By Tom on 6/27/2008 12:22 PM

What about you're shameless critisism of the Skins (and really bad jokes). So you are saying it's OK for you to do it by the Rocket can't? On this point, I would have to agree with Ira that since you opened the door to the jabs you should be able to take the heat. I mean lets get real, all this "blog" is is a glorified chat board with the same bunch of boners (me included) posting our thoughts, as ridiculous as they are. (DF: Earth to Tom, Earth to Tom: I allow Johnny and his anti-Baltimore and pro-Redskins stuff to grace this blog everytime he submits something. I don't care if he likes the Redskins. But I certainly DON'T like his criticism about Baltimore because, well, I'm FROM here. And, I don't like the Redskins and since it's my blog, I have the right to author bad Redskins jokes if I please, just like he (and you) had the right to criticize the Ravens and Baltimore...but I don't have to like it. But I'll always post his Redskins garbage as long as he follows the rules of no foul language. Now, what were YOU doing Tom back in 1992 when the Redskins last won their Super Bowl? ha ha)

Re: Friday Fun... By Pot Calling the Kettle on 6/28/2008 7:33 AM

What a historic moment. Having spent three years defending their walkout on Oriole Park - and their daily screeds against the Orange and Black - as "free speech," WNST is now going to censor one obscure poster because they think he "adds nothing to the discussion"...?
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.
Isn't that precisely why Nestor now watches games on television rather than the pressbox?
Looks like you're abandoning whatever moral high ground you once claimed. It must really burn to watch the O's having a great year while you toil in obscurity and irrelevance. (DF: Ira, let me again explain something to you since you can't listen or read. I have only said and written that LISTENERS of the station have asked me to suspend your privileges as a commenter..."WNST" hasn't said we won't allow you to post here. A handful of listeners/readers have asked that your posting rights be suspended. I have also said I would take their request under advisement, since, as you always point out, everyone's voice should be heard.)

Re: Friday Fun... By Ira Silverstein on 6/28/2008 7:40 AM

I am a bit curious as to why you write comments to yourself and sign my name? I would guess that this is your dirty little secret and won't post this comment. Don't you think that it is about time to come clean with all of this? How much of your life is steeped in these types of lies? (DF: This could be your best effort EVER...you're a dude using a fake name accusing someone else of posting something under a fake name. Might be the funniest thing you've ever contributed. You're back in my good graces with that one. If you can make me laugh, you can hang around. An imposter and a fraud calling someone else an imposter...that would be like Berkowitz and Manson meeting somewhere and Berkowitz saying, "I'd rather not have lunch with Charles, he's a bad guy...")
