We did such a good job on the O's...

While we're in "fixing" mode, let's say we fix the world of sports, OK?

Thursday morning, we'll spend a couple of hours talking about three things we'd like to personally fix in sports, amateur or professional.

Give it some thought tonight and come up with three things that bug you about sports - and your magic wand can fix them tomorrow morning. You can call the show at 410-481-1570 or e-mail me in the morning (drew@wnst.net) and I'll make your repair efforts public.

It's been fun the last two days, going down memory lane and talking about the overrated and underrated players in Baltimore sports history.

Today, we touched on the underrated theme. My top three, in case you missed it: 1) Brian Roberts -- 2) Edwin Mulitalo -- 3) Mike Cuellar

I already have my three items for Thursday morning's "fix it" show.

And none of them involve the Orioles, believe it or not. I think we've done enough fixin' on them for a while.

Speaking of the Baltimore nine, they evidently pitched a fit at OPACY because Chris Ray did 10 minutes on the air with Bob Haynie on Tuesday. E-mails and phone calls - "stern" was a word my sources used to convey how the O's were dealing with it internally - flew out of The Warehouse. Now, explain to me why the team would give a rat's rear about a player on their roster who isn't even going to pitch this year going on the air with the best sports talk host in town for 10 freakin' minutes? Explanation, anyone? Of course not.

I contacted the club's PR professionals on Tuesday but didn't hear back from either one of them. No reply at all. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Bush...League.

They are teetering on the verge of what could be a semi-magical summer in Baltimore and the baseball execs in town are fretting over one of their players going on the radio and helping to promote the team? I swear, sometimes I think they don't want to be successful over there at the ballpark.

Oh well...they've had enough humble pie in the last month or so to feed the members of Earth, Wind and Fire. Maybe they all just need a nap.

Tomorrow, it's full steam ahead fixing things that bug us in the world of sports.

Bring your magic wand.

1. Get ESPN to sell WJFK and fire the whole staff. (Back to the stalls Anita)
2. Convince the Yankees to hire Jim Hunter
3. Get Dan Angel. . . err Snyder to announce he's never selling the Redskins thus denying Johnny Rocket the chance to ever see another Super Bowl in DC.

1.a salary cap in baseball
2.a new owner of the "baltimore"orioles
3.i personally would like to see 18 regular season games in the nfl and only 2 preseason games.

Drew, could you fix the propensity for overblown self important radio in Baltimore? If you could force talk show hosts from spewing lies over the airwaves the whole of the city would be better. By the way, have you had time to retract your "even negative comments make their way onto our blogs" comment and also do you have any people willing to back up your claim that the O's 9 are upset or shoud this comment go into your "it is probably a lie" folder given your past history? (DF: Ira, if I could fix self-important blow-hard jag-offs in Baltimore, I'd start with you, bro.)

Re: We did such a good job on the O's... By John in Hampstead on 6/26/2008 7:35 AM

I'd like to listen, but I haven't been able to get internet connection from your station since you returned from vacation. Can't get reception on radio either that time of the morning. Must be because I live way out in Carroll County, about 25 miles from your station. So I'll just be content to read your "whining" about the O's instead of listening to it.

Re: We did such a good job on the O's... By David from Bel Air on 6/26/2008 7:32 AM

For starters, WNST should stop proclaiming "We never stop talking Baltimore sports" because it does - between 8pm and 6am every day. BTW, which marketing genius came up with that one? For Drew to stop ripping the O's a new one every day. Not returning your call? Let me put it bluntly - the O's don't give a rat's rear about WNST. Ray getting reprimanded? How do I know you'll not making that up, considering you and Nestor would love to see Angelos in a casket. How is Ray being on WNST promoting anything? - unless you think an audience of hundreds is worth promoting to. The bottom line is: WNST needs the O's much more than they need you, so this tit-for-tat you're having with them is a losing proposition. (DF: Hey Ira...oops, I mean "David"...read the blog and show me where I wrote that Chris Ray was "reprimanded" by the Orioles. I didn't. You did, though.)
fix the arena situation - we need a new arena - it would be profitable whether or not a team comes here - they did a study in another city who built a new arena with no team and it made money due to the fact that big concerts would come through - arent people tired of driving over an hour to go to a good concert? - furthermore i think it would bring a nba or nhl team here eventually - scratch offs built the 2 stadiums downtown so taxes probably wouldnt have to be raised

Re: We did such a good job on the O's... By Joe of Bel Air on 6/26/2008 9:49 AM

Drew, why don't you fix it so that clowns like David from Bel Air, Ira Silverstein, John in Hampstead and others aren't allowed to have their useless, childish comments posted. It's the same fools all the time criticizing you and NST but make no worthwhile contributions to the content of the station. Reading the same BS from the same people gets old after awhile. (DF: Yeah, Joe, s**t stirrers do tend to get old after a while, I'll agree with you. If you make a solid contribution AND stir the pot, that's acceptable. Don't worry, I think I have a solution for those folks. Stay tuned...)

Drew, What I would do to fix sports in Baltimore is:
1. Get rid of the National Anthem BUTCHER Maceo Miller who sings at the beginning of every Ravens home game. Does this guy have pictures of someone in a compromising position?
2. Tar and Feather anyone who yells OOOOOOh in the middle of the National Anthem, that is the biggest embarrassment in Baltimore.
3. Get the POS outfit S.A.F.E. Management to take off those piss yellow jackets for Ravens games, we need as little yellow in the stadium as possible especially when the Yunz from Pittsburgh comes to town.
Guaranteed contracts in baseball need to go for sure. However, the first thing I would do is this. When a university is put on probation of any kind, and the coach leaves or is fired, any punishment that is handed down to the school is also attached to the coach. So, when/if he takes another job (and they always do) his new school is under the same restrictions as his old school for the same length of time.

Love the show, dude. Keep up the good work.

First - I would stop disclosing the salaries of these overpaid athletes. Because of the players hugh egos and their agents (See #2) they all want to be the highest paid - thus disclosing their salaries fuels the every increasing salaries.
Second - Do away with all sports agents - let the players make their own deals. If they are not smart enough well that is too bad for them - maybe they should get an education instead of an agent.
Third - Find a owner for the Orioles that really cares about the product on the field - at least this year we finally have a team worth watching but the owner is still selling them short!
