Pimlico: Selections for Saturday (Day 22) & Handicapping Challenge
Location: BlogsBlogsGary Quill's Blog
Posted by: Gary Quill 5/24/2008 1:54 AM
The best things in life are FREE. So if you have some spare time early on Saturday, you may want to consider entering the brisnet.com Handicapping Challenge. You place a mythical $2 WIN and PLACE wager on a horse in each of the eight (8) pre-selected races. The top 50 players who accumulate the largest return could qualify for the NTRA National Handicapping Championship in 2009. For more information go to www.brisnet.com.

Recapping Day 21 (May 23rd)…

Best Bet, Bond Fire (# 3; 8th race; 9-5) turned out to be much the best versus his three rivals. He smartly stalked the pace under Mario Pino, just biding his time until it was time to run. Due to a couple scratches from this race, his odds (4-5) were shorter than anticipated, paying $3.80 for the WIN and $2.60 for PLACE (there was no SHOW betting).

Longshot, Peggys Run (# 7; 7th race on the turf; 20-1) was easily at least the second best horse in the race, it’s ashamed that jockey Chris Van Hassel compromised her chances by steadying her at the far turn as she was full of run. Somehow, she still showed willingness to run on in the stretch getting up for 3rd at 27-1, beaten only 3 ¼ lengths for the win. She returned $9.80 for the SHOW.

Here’s who I like for the Day 22 (May 24th) of the Pimlico Spring Meet…

Best Bet:         Cape Codder  (# 7; 2nd race; 9-2)

This gray filly seems to fall into a specific pattern… good race, bad race, good race, bad race. Guess what kind of race she should be sitting on today? She gets blinkers for the first time in her career, and has a win and a second in 2 starts at this (5 furlong) distance. If you’re at the track or can watch it via HRTV or online at Xpressbet or twinspires.com, if she is wearing front bandage wraps, all best are off! She has run her two worst races when running with “fronts” on.

Longshot:        Malibu Kate    (# 3; 1st race; 10-1)

Strange name for a gelding… Kate?! Whatever, this maiden has a tall task in that a recent Scott Lake claim (#1 - Love Tour) for $25k is in here for $16k? Why would you risk losing $9k on a horse you just claimed last month? That is unless he doesn’t have the will to win? Too many questions surround the # 1 and the others in here are all 3 year olds whereas “Katie” is 4. Plus, I like the turn back to 6 furlongs after showing early speed going long, then weakening in the stretch. I doubt we’ll see 10-1, but it’s worth a shot trying to beat the even money M/L favorite.

Good Luck with your selections today!
