Alex Cora is a good sport, let me say that right off the bat.
Aided by seats that were, literally, in the front row and 15 feet from the Red Sox dugout, I had a VERY memorable afternoon today at Fenway Park at Camden Yards.
First off, I won a week's worth of Royal Farms coffee from Bob Haynie. If you missed it, I bet Bob - on the air - that Daniel Cabrera would give up at least two home runs in today's game. Cabrera was outstanding again - going 7 innings and walking no one - but much to my delight he's now "2-Dinger Danny" instead of 5-walk Danny...and Haynie owes me five, count 'em, five coffees from Royal Farms. Funny thing - right before Varitek's home run, I offered Bob a 3-coffee "buy-out" and he turned it down.
Anyway, with the park jammed with Red Sox faithful, I figured it was appropriate to break out my 1970's Orioles gray away jersey that has "BALTIMORE" stitched across the front - it was, after all, a semi-away-game for the Birds today, so the away jersey was acceptable.
Not long after we settled into our seats did the heckling begin.
I barked at Cora - "Hey Alex, you're not gonna let these scrubs beat you guys two days in a row are you?" and he waved me off and shook his head from side to side and mouthed "No Way".
We berated ManRam every single time he trotted in after the end of an inning, but he must have given his rabbit ears to Cora because The Dreaded One never even acknowledged us.
By the way, that was one helluva catch he made in left field. Spectacular. Gotta give a man credit when credit is due. And, also, he was safe in the 8th inning, but who cares? And why wasn't Manny tossed when he fired his helmet at the ump after that bad call?
Anyway, back to the heckling. There were plenty of Red Sox fans in and around our immediate area of the stands. Makes you wonder, huh? How did these Red Sox folks get seats in Row C, D, E, F and G of Section 54? I wonder...
At one point, two kids, maybe 12 years old each, sat down behind us and one of them immediately said: "The Orioles suck..." I turned around and said, "Yeah, really? They're beating your sorry team 6-3 right now." Imagine that. These two Bah-stun young'uns sneak down into the good seats and start harrassing adults right in front of them. I had to remind them that their team was about to get swept by the team that "sucks". Consider it a lesson in fan-interaction-education, right?
Cora remained a playful target throughout the game and we gave him an earful every time he went on and off the field. He would occasionally smirk or smile and while they were ahead, it probably WAS funny to him.
It didn't seem so funny when Jay Payton hit that grand slam to put the O's up to stay in the 7th inning.
We still heckled him after that but it was all business from that point forward. Cora's probably a good guy, actually. It was fun "giving him stick", as they say over in England.
There were some sullen faces in that ballpark as we exited FPACY. I'm telling you, the place was jam packed with Boston fans and they didn't know what the hell to do.
Swept by the Orioles.
OK, it was only two games, but who cares, right?
Swept by the Orioles.
Right before the final out, I yelled out to Kevin Youkilis, "Hey Youkilis, how do you say 'we just got swept' in Greek?"
He looked over at me and scowled. He wasn't happy. Neither was some guy in a Red Sox jacket who was standing next to Youkilis - a trainer, most likely. He frowned at me as if to say, "Dude, when we come back here in a few weeks your team will be 10 games under .500 and we'll have a 6-game lead in the division." It was a snotty look that he shot me, that's for sure.
It was a lot of fun at FPACY today. A 6-3 win over, say, the Twins, wouldn't have been nearly as much fun, I'm sure.
Red Sox Nation took over for a day and left with their tail between their legs.
Oh, if you see Haynie, remind him I like cream and sugar in my coffee.

nice story, but guess what- Kevin Youkilis is Jewish, not Greek-- (DF: Someone should tell that to A's GM Billy Beane then - he called him "The Greek God of Walks" in a book I read a couple of years ago...if he's Jewish, no wonder he scowled at me when I asked him to speak Greek! ha ha) |

Good story. I seem to remember a similar account from some blogger after the O's beat the Yankees one Saturday night in April. Fun, isn't it? The sad part is that it's only fun because we've been told that we're supposed to suck. I appreciate Dave Trembley and his perspective. He's said over and over, "This is 2008." I think the perormances of Guthrie (even though he dogged you this morning, guffaw, guffaw) and Cabrera are noteworthy. I'll never trash talk Mazzone, but so far, it seems that Kranitz has these guys thinking differently. Last year Guthrie probably gets run out in the 4th, still steaming about the atrocities at first and third in the first. I'm not sure if the day off helps or hurts. Good for Roberts, Mora, Mendoza (sorry, Hernandez) and those nursing injuries, but bad for the Mo. Although you do get to skip Trachsel. Go easy on them. At the quarter pole, they're 21-19. Times 4 equals 84-76 with two to play. Say you split those two. Would you take 85-77? And I did hear Gary Thorne plug that bike thing... (DF: "Go easy on them", he wrote. I've been easy on them all year. Why change now?)

I seriously hope you plan on singing the praises of a team that is finally turning things around tomorrow morning, otherwise you are going to have one irate caller. Look, Angelos sucks, we all know that. And AT LEAST 30% of owners of sports teams around the country suck too. Travel a bit and listen to local radio. But, that is not the player's fault. That O's video that Millar put together is solid gold. These guys are playing their butts off and the least you could do was acknowledge it. (DF: I acknowledged their play for 3 hours today by heckling the Red Sox...I talk about the team EVERY day and when they win and play hard, I speak about that. When the front office continues to botch their marketing endeavors (and fails to take advantage of an improving team) I'm going to talk about that as well. 410-481-1570 is the number. I hit the air at 6:07 am on Thursday. The floor is yours.)

His "2 dingers" were solo shots. As Palmer would say, if you are going to give them up, thats the way to do it. BTW, traditional fast balls pitchers are going to be giving up a few dingers now and then. All in all, you ALMOST gave him credit for growing as a pitcher. (DF: Solo shots or not...I'm getting a week's worth of coffee from Haynie. By the way, I talked at length this morning about Cabrera's season and how he's the team's best pitcher right now. Of course, you don't hear that stuff.) |

I was there today, and it was embarrassing feeling like away fans in our own park. And it took until the 7th inning to drown out the "Let's go Red Sox" chants. However, that grand slam by Payton made up for it all. Way to break out the brooms...and I hope all those Sawx fans had miserable experiences, and hope we do it more often to them and Yankee fans, maybe just maybe it'll be enough to keep them away, or at least keep them grounded when they do come. |

With the team playing well, what marketing efforts specifically are they screwing up? "Baltimore" on the jerseys is one we know. And coming on your show doesn't count because you put a year ban on them. So what else? (DF: I'll be blogging about some of their marketing woes on Thursday and bringing up some of them on Thursday's show too...check back then. And I would GLADLY rescind my one-year suspension of them on a one-off basis to promote a positive marketing effort on the team's part. After all, as Steve Bisciotti showed last December, I always have the right to "change my mind"...ha ha...) |

Drew, you sure do have some idiot listeners. Even when you go to the ballpark and razz the other team and enjoy yourself and revel in the Orioles success, you have nitwits (as you like to say) who take you to task for your afternoon of pleasure. Don't tell them what you had to eat at the ballpark, they'll probably criticize you for that too. Keep up the good work and keep your foot on their throat. When the team does get turned around off the field you'll be a big reason why, my friend. P.S. Going to Van Halen on Thursday? (DF: Yeah, it is kind of weird that on a day when I go to the game, have fun and heckle the hell out of the other team that I still have people huffing and puffing about something I did, said or wrote. Nonetheless, I had fun today, so who cares what the critics say? After all, my critics have critics. As for Van Halen...no, I'm not going. If they promised to play either Mean Street or Little Guitars, I would have to sneak in using some of my old Arena Security Guard contacts! lol) |

Drew,

Its not your job to analyze the teams marketing decisions. No one that listens to real sports talk radio cares about marketing decisions. Your show is starting to sound like ESPN and the girl down the dial. Please, concentrate on the players and the games themselves. That is what really matters. Unless you aspire to be a soap talk radio host.

Also, what is the deal with FPACY. You wonder why this radio station gets no love from the team at all. When this team is consistently successful over the next few years, you are going to have a lot of explaining to do. Most fans noticed the change when McPhail took over and stopped bashing the team needlessly. Even McNair and Harbaugh were honored by the O's this year and you would never have seen that prior to McPhail.

Ciao (DF: My job is to TALK about sports. And part of sports is discussing attendance, marketing, etc. So, actually, it IS my job to talk about the Orioles marketing endeavors. I expect the team to be good at some point in the next few years. I won't have any explaining to do about that. If you would actually listen to the show (since last June), I've applauded Andy MacPhail time and time again for his efforts in rebuilding the club. It's a shame no one is going to the games to witness the resurgence.)

I heckled you because I can't turn on your show without you bashing the O's in some way, shape or form. PA deserves all the crap he gets. But, for once, he made the right move - hiring Macphail. Now the team is showing signs of life for the future and yet you STILL gripe! My buddy and I text each other occassionally (when we can stomach to listen) about how guys like Wild Bill are probably rolling over in their graves when they hear you complain relentlessly. Just be positive! Be the better people! That's what being a true Orioles fan is about... PA is a lawyer for Godsakes, he's supposed to be scum. THAT'S why I heckle you Drew. (DF: I don't really care that you heckle me, bro. Heckle away tomorrow by calling 410-481-1570 if you feel so inclined. Text your buddy and tell him to call too. I'm sure you two will find SOMETHING you can rattle my cage about during the show!) |

Man, you're a defensive somebody. When I wrote "Go easy on them," I was suggesting that all Oriole fans take note of our standing. Had I meant to address you specifically on that point, I would have prefaced it that way. In fact, I followed it with a comment regarding the unexpected success they have had this year by exceeding the .500 mark a quarter of the way into the season. Keep it in context. (DF: I assumed since you were responding to MY blog that you were addressing ME. Go easy on me, huh?) |

"Two-Dinger Danny", it's good to read you're back in good spirits after today's "Full-Moon Morning Show". Hopefully, Bob will pay up this time around or he'll be "Bad-Debt Bob". By the way, the best coffee is always free coffee. < | | | |
