How about a quick version of 22 questions?

It's a Wednesday. That's a good thing.

There's day baseball in Baltimore, as the O's host the Red Sox at Fenway Park at Camden Yards. That's a good thing too. Well, the day baseball part is a good thing. Boston fans in Baltimore isn't such a good thing, but that's the team's fault, not Baltimore's.

But, I'll be out there at FPACY today, so this edition of 22 questions needs to be a little more speedy than normal.

Ready? Fire away.

Just don't ask me whether or not the soon-to-be-retiring Annika Sorenstam is the best female golfer ever. Of course she is.

A couple of weeks ago you wrote that you think jockeys are the coolest athletes. Do you really think a jockey is an athlete? (DF: Yes. If you don't think commandeering a 1-ton animal around a track at 35 MPH with 15 other horses within a 25-foot area is an athletic endeavor, then perhaps you should get up on a horse and try it yourself.)

Re: How about a quick version of 22 questions? By Steve in Bel Air on 5/14/2008 6:00 AM

If Annika is as great as you say she is, how come she can't beat the worst mens player on the pro tour? (DF: First off, I think her 72 career wins say she's great. She can't beat the men because she's a woman and she doesn't have the strength to compete with them. The same way that the world's best female boxer couldn't beat Floyd Mayweather, Jr.)

Re: How about a quick version of 22 questions? By Raven Fan on 5/14/2008 6:18 AM

Do you think the Ravens will re-sign Kyle Boller as a backup if Joe Flacco ends up being our starter sometime this year? Will they release Troy Smith if his performance falls behind Boller on the depth chart? (DF: I think they'll keep all three quarterbacks on the roster...but if Flacco blossoms into their starter, either Boller or Smith will be gone by '09.)

Re: How about a quick version of 22 questions? By Bill in Parkville on 5/14/2008 6:32 AM

With Trachsel all but gone it would seem, would you be in favor of the Orioles signing Mike Mussina to a 2-3 year deal after this season to allow him to mentor our young pitchers? (DF: I would love to see Mussina spend a year or two here but that's not going to happen - in fact, John Feinstein said on my show last week that Mussina told him '08 would be his last season in the majors.)

Re: How about a quick version of 22 questions? By Champ on 5/14/2008 6:34 AM

How do you choose your Friday featured artist? Can I make a request? (DF: I just pick someone at random, mostly. Sure, you can make a request: drew@wnst.net)

Re: How about a quick version of 22 questions? By Sydney from Charles Nusinov & Sons on 5/14/2008 6:38 AM

Do you take satisfaction knowing you signed Denison Cabral to the Spirit and seeing his continued success today? (DF: Denison is certainly one of the best professionals the Blast/Spirit/Blast have ever had. It's always enjoyable to see him do well for the franchise.)

Re: How about a quick version of 22 questions? By O'sFan84 on 5/14/2008 6:35 AM

Will you EVER stop bashing the team's front office and marketing efforts? (DF: Absolutely. As soon as they fix their relationship with the fans of Baltimore who "made" the franchise, I'll move on.)

Re: How about a quick version of 22 questions? By Bill McCarthy on 5/14/2008 7:15 AM

How many foursomes are left for the 22nd and how many foursomes returning from last year? It is an outstanding outing and day. (DF: Hey Bill, look forward to seeing you and your group on the 22nd. We have 7 foursomes left and I think about 10 foursomes returning from '07. Looking forward to a great day next Thursday.)

Re: How about a quick version of 22 questions? By rex on 5/14/2008 7:58 AM

If you took a quick glance into your "crystal ball" and looked down the road ten years, what would the state of the Orioles, Ravens and Preakness be on May 14, 2018 ..... (DF: Nestor owns the Orioles and they win the World Series. Trent Dilfer is the GM of the Ravens and hires Brian Billick to be the coach and the Ravens win the Super Bowl. I get to play golf with Tiger Woods at Doral CC in Miami and later on in the day go to the Preakness with him at Gulfstream Park.)

Re: How about a quick version of 22 questions? By The "Armchair" QB on 5/14/2008 8:28 AM

What's the format for next Thursday's golf tournament? I've been practicing in anticipation, but if my swing doesn't improve, I may have to cut my clubs down and use them as.....paperweights! (DF: It's a captain's choice, so your bad swing won't hurt you too much. I might even play a few holes with you to really disrupt your potential.)

Re: How about a quick version of 22 questions? By Justin on 5/14/2008 8:20 AM

I know you hate the flyers but are you really that high on the pens? It seems to me like choosing between the Yankees or the Red Sox in the ALCS. (DF: I'm about to go get a Penguins t-shirt if they sweep the Flyers, that's how high on them and how much I despise the freakin' Flyers. 4-0 baby...sweeeeeeeeeppppppppp!!!!)

Re: How about a quick version of 22 questions? By Mark on 5/14/2008 8:16 AM

I can't believe it. I turned on the radio at 7:30 this morning and you were still talking about the Caleb Campbell military thing and now you're saying the service academies should just recruit athletes and let them play? Stop talking about this subject, please. (DF: Mark, let me explain how the radio show works for you. Obviously, you don't fully understand how it goes. People call the show. When they call the show, I talk to them. If they call the show and want to talk about hockey, I'll talk hockey. If they want to talk horse racing, I'll talk horse racing. If they talk baseball, I'll talk baseball. Today, Ed in Park Heights called in about the Caleb Campbell situation. So, I talked with him about that subject. Other callers called in today and wanted to talk about the Caleb Campbell situation, so I talked to them about it. That's how the show works. I brought up the "recruiting issue" because a lot of people out there seem to think it's OK for the Army to allow Campbell out of his battlefield obligation to serve as a recruiter...thinking that having an Army/athlete is going to get more people to sign up for the Army. Well, if that's indeed true (and I don't think it works that way, but I digress), why not just recruit 12 really good high school basketball players, let them play college b-ball at West Point and then allow them to just recruit for the next 5 years while they play in the NBA? Everyone wins there, right? Army gets recruiters and new people to sign up.)

Name the Top 5 San Diego Sockers Players of all time. (DF: In their prime: 5. Clavijo 4. Quinn 3. Veee 2. Segota 1. Nogueira)

Re: How about a quick version of 22 questions? By Steve on 5/14/2008 8:32 AM

Drew...I'd like to draw on your golf expertise....What is the number one tip/swing thought to hitting a great drive? Thanks (DF: First off, think STRAIGHT, not long. Second, swing at 80%.)

Re: How about a quick version of 22 questions? By Robert from Towson on 5/14/2008 9:49 AM

Drew,

Listening to you this morning talking to David Steele, you said that it does not seem that the Preakness is what it used to be, in terms of a Baltimore signature event. I do agree with that assessment, because of the obvious reasons. Thinking about that, do you think if we had a local horse win the Preakness, interest would pick up? Remember, it has been 25 years since Deputed Testimony. Just like what the orioles should do in honoring the past, MJC should honor this horse. (DF: I'm not sure exactly how the Preakness could be attractive to people "my age" or thereabouts. It just seems like it's an event for the 20-something crowd (which is fine...revenue is revenue, after all) and they don't offer any real attractions to the guys/gals in their 40's or so who would like to participate in a "Baltimore event" once a year. I don't have the answers...I just know it doesn't feel - to me - like this an event that Baltimore is proud of anymore.)

Re: How about a quick version of 22 questions? By Bill on 5/14/2008 9:55 AM

Drew,

Is there any way that you can stop talking about how the Orioles market thier team? Please let them do thier job. I agree with one of your last callers today that if you follow the O's on TV and radio, you would know about all of the promotions and give-aways, including lunch Q & A's with players at ESPN zone. I do not need a player or team rep coming on any radio station to promote these events, since they clearly advertise them during the games.

Another subject that you badger is the attendance. The team has lost for ten straight years. That is the biggest reason. To show how great the ownership markets the team, the O's were in the top five in attendance in the AL up until 2006. So for eight straight years, not only did we lose, we also were in the top five in attendance in the AL. I feel that is very impressive considering how bad some of those teams were.

I completely agree that the ownership has made some bad decisions with player contrats and personel. But, since the McPhail hiring we real O's fans have had nothing but great things
