Calling All Horseracing Experts .....
Location: BlogsBlogsRex Snider's Blog

Whenever I get a chance, I like to talk about auto racing. Specifically, I like talking about NASCAR. I think I’m as knowledgeable as the most informed fan ….. with an understanding of the machine, as well as the driver. In fact, I’m quite comfortable in this environment.

That said, I’m not very informed on the sport of horseracing. While I understand the most casual nuances of the sport, I am not educated on the intricacies of handicapping, track dynamics, and the things that simply make a horse “tick”. I’m ignorant, but I’ll happily admit it.

Still, I am intrigued by horseracing from a business perspective and I’ve intently wondered about the industry’s lack of promotion and outreach to the communities it engulfs. To say the horseracing industry underachieves, from a pure business model, appears reasonable to the uninformed ….. which includes ME.

I see Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart hogging TV endorsements and I simply ask why horseracing can’t follow that model. Hey, it’s racing and it works for those guys. Jump in the “wayback machine” ….. who would’ve thought NASCAR would be this popular, back in 1985?

I’ll admit, when the ‘Derby, Preakness or Belmont is about to get underway, I perk up and get excited. I like watching the race and really enjoy the essence of seeing an 1100-pound beast thunder around the track. Horseracing is VERY INTENSE ….. that’s why I’d love to see it prosper.

Over the past week, I’ve done some homework and read a good bit of information. I’ve learned there’s the propensity for some “suspicious” possibilities unfolding at Pimlico. I guess what I’m asking is does the industry or sanctioning body have the influence and ability to create a desired racing surface? And, if so, is this an ethical practice?

Pointedly, is it possible that they’ll make the track at Pimlico “softer and deeper” in an effort to slow the horses and ensure a safe race? Let’s face it, this isn’t Gladiator, and there aren’t any Russell Crowe-ish characters running around with sword in hand. We live in a sensitive time, from a sensationalist perspective. The last thing the horseracing industry needs is another dead horse. Right?

I think it makes perfect sense for stakeholders to do everything possible to ensure a peaceful, happy conclusion to the race. The emphasis of attention will be devoted to laying painted daisies on the back of the race winner, instead of a sheet across the carcass of a competitor, right? And, everybody wins ….. or do they?

Is a manufactured or “orchestrated” surface fair to Big Brown? Does an intentional slowed track befit a “plodder” or horse that’s substandard in true comparison to the Kentucky Derby winner? I’m just asking …..

I’m not big on conspiracy theories, but where’s Vince McMahon when you need him?

Rex; Here's an excerpt from my blog dated 05/07/08 in reference to the death of Eight Belles in the Derby... " Now that the horse racing industry has been put under a microscope, the Pimlico Race Course surface will be scrutinized as well. This is a good thing! In years past, the Pimlico oval leading up to Preakness Day would become a much faster surface. That is, the race times would be much quicker that usual. I assume in hopes that track records would fall?! I guarantee this year will be the complete opposite. Pimlico will be the safest track in the country. It better be, because if there is the unlikelihood of a similar incident on Preakness Day, it might be a setback that the NTRA will have a hard time from which to recover." A softer, deeper race track SHOULD be a safer race track. That's not to say anything else is unsafe. Common sense will tell you that a softer surface is easier on the legs than a hard surface. Ask anyone who is a runner. They run marathons on concrete and blacktop while Cross Country races are run on grass and dirt. Both are safe, but which surface provides the runner with faster times? Enough said.
call over there and ask to speak to Jamie Richardson, the track superintendant. He's a North Harford grad. Down to earth guy. Straight shooter. He played a big role in keeping Barbaro alive and getting the horse the best care as quickly as possible.

I'm sure he's praying for no on track incedents after the Derby and the '06 Preakness.
