Breaking news from the Orioles. It arrived in my e-mail inbox late yesterday and I brought it up on today's show.
Here's the crux of the press release:
The Orioles today announced a partnership with Richmond, Virginia radio station WLEE 990 AM that adds the Richmond news-talk station to the Orioles Radio Network. The partnership officially begins on Tuesday, when WLEE begins broadcasting Orioles games and kicks off a series of season-long promotions.
The Orioles Radio Network has tripled in size since the start of the 2006 season. There are now 30 stations in the Orioles Radio Network, covering Maryland, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. WLEE marks the eighth new addition for 2008 and the eighth affiliated station in Virginia.
“We are pleased to add WLEE to the family of stations in the Orioles Radio Network,” said Orioles Director of Communications Greg Bader. “The Orioles have always had a strong following in Richmond, and throughout Virginia, and this partnership gives O’s fans in the area another opportunity to follow the team when they aren’t able to make it to Camden Yards.”
So, there you have it. The Orioles have gone out of their way to cater to fans of the team in someplace OTHER than Baltimore.
I especially like the sentence at the end of the press release: "...and this partnership gives O's fans in the area another opportunity to follow the team when they aren't able to make it to Camden Yards."
Memo to the team's front office: THEY AREN'T COMING FROM RICHMOND. GAS IS $4.00 A GALLON. THEY CAN GO TO WASHINGTON D.C. TO SEE BASEBALL AND SAVE THEMSELVES 90 MILES ROUND TRIP.
All of this "concern" about reaching out to the fans in "the area" is laughable.
Try worrying about the people in BALTIMORE of all places.
Come to think about it, we're about to see if the team is, indeed, worried about the people in Baltimore.
The deadline for making changes to the '09 uniforms/logo (and adding BALTIMORE to the jerseys) is May 31.
The clock is ticking on that issue.
Thankfully, though, the good people of Richmond, VA can now follow the Birds on the radio.
Does the team care about the fans in Baltimore?
We'll know in a few weeks.
Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock...

I almost wish you wouldn't bring up "Baltimore" on the road jerseys so the decision makers in the Warehouse can be made to feel like it was THEIR idea so they'll actually do it.

Hey genious, ever think that the Richmond Braves WILL be moving out after this season, with no other team on the horizon??? It's open market. Nice spin, though. They beat the Nats to it. (DF: *Ahem*, Mark: It's not "genious", it's "genius". I'm a dummy and I know that much.)

I'm assuming that the press release must have come from the Richmond station itself???? After all, didn't Greg Bader make it perfectly clear that you guys at WNST were "insignificant"??? Surely they wouldn't stoop so low as to send WNST a press release if the station is so insignificant... |

My brother and a few good friends actually live in Richmond and are huge O's fans. They're pumped about this. And they say there are a ton of O's fans in the area. What makes us any more important than them because we live in Baltimore? And your point about the gas prices - I think that might be the point. People can't afford to drive up here, so they're making the games available to them there. Why would they go see the Nats if they are O's fans? They want O's baby! I think this is a positive move. Good for the O's. (DF: You didn't get the point, but that's not a shock. If gas prices ARE the point, why wouldn't the Orioles do a better job of marketing to the people that aren't affected by the gas prices when it comes to driving to the games? That would be, of course, the people of the Baltimore area. The good news for your brother and his friends is that on almost any night, there are 35,000 seats available from which to choose...)

I think people in Baltimore are more concerned about putting out a winning team than what is on the front of the uniform. So, they added another radio outlet. Big deal. I know you will go on your usual tirade about how they thumb their nose to the people of Baltimore. They have done that. They have started to at least taking steps to correct that. Rome wasn't built in a day neither will the Orioles repairing the relationship with the fans of Baltimore.

Wha-wha-what? Whether you agree with it or not it makes perfect sense. Richmond is a market. They want to capture that market, and odds are Richmond folks aren't driving to Baltimore, so they get the games to them. And that's what the people of Richmond want - games on TV, because they can't travel up here. It's good business, and it's positive for all those great folks down there. Maybe it'll help pay for us to get a big hitter in the offseason. TV ad sales is where all the money is. I understand you're view on how they treat Baltimore, but why does Richmond have anything to do with that? (DF: I didn't say anything about the merits of bringing a Richmond RADIO (not TV, Tom) station on board. I just brought up the point that once again the club has gone out of its way to cater to a "regional" market while continuing to ignore the very market in which their team makes its revenue-living: BALTIMORE. That's all I said (wrote). It would be nice if they focused on BALTIMORE as much as they focused on these other outlying areas like Richmond, Lancaster, Ocean City, Smyrna and Cumberland.) |

Are there any Nats fans in Richmond then, or does that team not care about that market? Frankly, I've always written off Virginia as Redskin/ Nats territory. It's nice to put our Baltimore stamp on there city. |

It's not a zero sum game, Drew. Because they've extended broadcasting to a regional area doesn't mean the Baltimore area suffered more or lost something. Be happy for the regional areas that they can share in our joy of .500. Just for clarification, does "ignoring the Baltimore market" at this point just boil down to the name on the jersey? |

They have to search for other markets since you told the city of Baltimore to boycott the Orioles (march out of games, etc). And what's wrong with OC getting the games? Ever think that tourists might want to watch the games, even on vacation? Get over it !!! |

Just about everyone on this thread is missing Drew's point. Richmond wants to be O's fans? That's great. It would just be nice if the team acknowledged the fans right in their backyard... who DON'T have to worry too much about gas prices to go to the games... who can go take public trans... and do you realize how many 22-35 year olds live in Federal Hill and Fells Point who could WALK to Camden Yards? The worst part about this press release is that it lays for the foundation for their reason at the end of the month why they are NOT returning "Baltimore" on the road jerseys... perfect timing guys! (DF: There is a God...) |

SO I wonder how many fans from Richmond drive 3 hours to come to an Orioles game at Camden Yards? With the gas prices climbing to near 4 bucks a gallon I think that number is ZERO. And who the hell wants to listen to Joe Angel and Fred Manfra night after night? Typical Orioles brass PR move.

I spent a couple days in NC last week and and wore my Orioles' shirt. A couple people came up to me and said "Baltimore, nice city". I couldn't understand how they knew I was from Baltimore, it wasn't on my away jersey. |
