Caps Lose to Flyers and Officials

The Bruce Boudreau era started with a Caps OT win in Philadelphia last November and his first season as head coach came to a crashing end today as the Flyers won on a power play goal in OT to win their first round Stanley Cup Playoff series four games to three at the Verizon Center on Tuesday night. This was a heartbreaking loss for the Caps and their fans and the way the game was officiated by Paul Devorski and Don “have another donut” Koharski should leave a very bad taste in their mouths as well.

The Flyers second goal was very controversial. Right before a loose puck made its way to Sami Kapanen, Philadelphia's Patrick Thoresen gave Shaone Morrisonn a shove, and the Washington defenseman plowed into Huet, knocking the goalie off his skates. Apparently the NHL and their “spin doctors” posted an explanation on the Web, saying Thoresen legally body checked Morrisonn and no Philadelphia player made contact with Huet. This is horse manure. You cannot legally body check someone if they don’t have the puck and Morrisonn NEVER had the puck so Thoreson should have been called for interference. Koharski and Devorski missed the boat with a no call and that is pathetic in a Game 7. Koharski should have retired several years ago anyways, he is a terrible referee and has gotten worse over the years.

Also, the call on Tom Poti in OT was very questionable given the way things had been not called in third period. For the Flyers to win a series on a borderline power play is just awful for the game and for Washington.

So now the league misses out on a Pittsburgh-Washington and a Crosby versus Ovechkin showdown but maybe we’ll get to see that next spring.

For the Caps, the referees calls and no-calls will hurt but what will also sting was their inability to finish off several chances in the third period, especially the situation where Ovechkin was all alone with Flyers goalie Marty Biron in the slot with two minutes left. The Great #8 passed up a great shooting opportunity there and tried to pass to Sergei Fedorov instead. Ovechkin will be thinking about that decision all season.

I’ll have more on the game and the Caps season over the next several days but one thing that does need to be pointed out was the outstanding play of Caps goalie Cristobal Huet who single handily kept Washington in the game at the end of the first period when the Flyers played all but 22 seconds of the last six minutes on the power play (two minutes of which the Flyers had a two man advantage). During those penalty kills there were several holds and hooks by Flyer players that also did not get called. But that is what you get with Koharski and for the league's sake I hope he does not officiate another playoff game this season.

Looking at the replay, I thought interference should have been called in the 2nd period. It was a close call. They let the Caps get away with a no-call early in OT so I knew the next time it occurred, it was going to be called. Not a good play by a veteran like Poti. On the game winning goal, Jurcina was doing nothing in front of the net. In the off-season, Caps need a bring in a quality defenseman who can clear the front of the net and bring fear to the opposing team when crossing he blue line.

Ed, <br>I emailed Drew about this but didn't hear him mention it. He said the NHL had released a statement that said something along the lines of it's not goalie interference because it wasn't a Flyer that hit Huet. How do they reconcile that with THEIR recap from April 3rd Caps vs Lightning http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app?service=page&page=Recap&gameNumber=1202&season=20072008&gameType=2<br><br>"The Capitals thought they had tied the score less than 90 seconds later when Brooks Laich put in a rebound, but the goal was disallowed in an unusual case of secondhand goaltender interference. Washington's Tomas Fleischmann pushed defenseman Matt Smaby into goalie Karri Ramo, who had come well outside of the crease."<br><br>Interesting that Dvorski was a linesman on the officiating crew for that game (Note from Ed: Great question Justin. I'm sure Colin Campbell will come up with some Mumbo Jumbo to mealy mouth the non call. It was interference ALL of the WAY and it should have been called. Pathetic for a game 7.)

I do have to agree with you in the fact that Koharski stinks and it is time for him to go but you are wrong when you say that Morrisson did not have the puck. I just watched a replay on nhl network and when Kapanen takes his first shot it is Morrisson who stops and is trying to clear it when Thoreson hits him. Watch it again. Also I remember watching that Lightning game and at the time ALL capital announcers and fans thought that was a horrible call to call the interference,as did I. You can't have two different opinions on the same call. The wrong call was made in tampa and the right call was made last night, just so happens caps got screwed on both calls. (Note from Ed: I will watch the replay, haven't seen it yet, but if Morrisonn had the puck right before he was hit then it was legal. UPDATE from Ed: Okay I saw the replay and see the angle you saw as well as other angles. I still say it was interference and it was the talk of Hockey Night in Canada Radio today. Scott Morrison and Jeff Marek felt the goal should not have been allowed but Barry Melrose thinks it should have been but it is all moot now.)

I don’t know what the rule book says, but comparing last night’s wipe out of Huet to the Tampa call, last night was even more blatant. If it’s ok to knock a defenseman into the goalie, then the Caps forwards need to learn how to do that. Agree Huet was great, he needs to be signed. Ollie can be signed as the backup, or be the goalie coach. I too noticed that Jurcina was very slow to react on the game winning goal – you gotta clear that guy out immediately, that goal was on him. And Poti – he knows that’s a trip, so either don’t do it, or understand it COULD get called. Koharski has always and will always stink, Schoenfeld was right. Not a big fan of burying the whistle totally, but you have to be clear about where you will draw the line – the second trip was not much worse than the first one. As for Ovie’s pass, I think Federov is just too old to react to that – 10 years ago, even if he was not looking for the pass, he could have gotten the stick down. Yea, #8 coulda shot, but Biron was way, way out and that should have been an easy tap in. Lots of respect for Federov’s career, but he’s got a lot of miles on him now. I think a Brooks Laich, who has been great for the last couple of month, woulda made that play. Bottom line, it sucks to lose to a Flyers team that was very beatable, but considering they sleep-walked thru the first 3 games, it was a great effort to extend it to a game 7 OT, just like it was a great effort to simply get there. Bodes well for the future. They need to bolster the D, sign Huet and get a couple of more scrappy forwards who will forecheck and go to the net. And give Boudreau a real contract. Go Habs, beat Philly! (Note from Ed: Great points Bob! I plan on putting out Caps final grades and what I think they need to do between now and next season. We all see the need on defense but I will try and point out what salary cap issues the team will likely have. I am rooting for Montreal in the East as well over Philly, NYR, and Pitt).

Re: Caps Lose Game 7 - Change in Scoring on Flyers 2nd goal    By Jimmy The Saint on 4/23/2008 3:31 PM

I believe there was a scoring change on the Flyers second goal. Give the assists to Koharski and Devorski!

Re: Caps Lose Game 7    By Bob from Parkville (NTB) on 4/23/2008 10:31 PM

Ed: I forgot all about the cap! A lowdown on that would be fabulous. Hopefully it does not hinder them from doing what they need to do. Also, I am sure you will have the free agent breakdown for us as well. You've spoiled us with your updates, so I am looking forward to your year end synopsis! I am a little concerned the Habs let Boston take them to 7 games, but hopefully they've got their act together, a sweep of the Flyers is all I am asking for.....(Note from Ed: Thanks Bob, I just posted my year end synopsis. Come closer to July I'll get in to more of the free agent situation but Huet and Theodore are the prime goalies).
