E-5...O's drop the ball with Brooks

In an effort to keep the lunatics from chiming in and saying, "there goes Drew again, bashing the Orioles for no reason", I ignored the Brooks-gets-his-award-in-York-instead-of-Baltimore story. For a day.

Tuesday night in York (PA), Brooks Robinson was honored by Rawlings as their Gold Glove "Best Defensive 3rd Baseman Ever", a summer-long program they're producing to honor the game's all-time great defensive players. Brooks is a part-owner of an independent minor league team in York, so it makes sense for him to be there...but he can sign autographs there any night he wants. It's not like #5's appearance on Tuesday was a once-a-summer visit. Still, the stadium was packed with adoring, applauding fans. When he accepted the award in York on Tuesday, Brooks said to the overflow crowd..."I don't get treated like this very often, believe me."

Why did Brooks receive the award in Southern Pennyslvania and not in Baltimore? The Orioles were home on Tuesday night against Kansas City. Why didn't he receive his award at OPACY?

Who knows?

The club doesn't answer questions like that from members of the media who care about the subject and would like to know the answer.

WBAL Radio's Steve Davis is absolutely in danger of having his press credential revoked after his show last night. He crushed the Orioles on the subject of Brooks not receiving the award in Baltimore. It felt good to actually hear someone else in town take the team to task for shoddy treatment of their legends. Maybe "Ira Silverstein" can start harrassing Steve instead of me.

Robinson's association with the Orioles has been rocky for the last several years. A few years back, the team wanted Brooks to be involved with the team in a community-relations capacity. Brooks told the club from the outset that he'd like to have a role here, but that his lifestyle and business committments would prohibit him from making it a 12-month, 5-day-a-week gig. What did the team do? They told Brooks they had a great position in mind for him but that he would need to be in Baltimore "full-time" to make it work. My sources tell me Brooks looked at that as an attempt by the team to merely satisfy the applicant pool -- in other words, the club offered Brooks a position that they KNEW he wouldn't accept, thereby having the right to say, "we offered Brooks a position but he didn't want it" when the media and fans asked the club why one of the team's most popular players ever wasn't part of the organization.

There are a lot of good things going on at The Warehouse these days, but their decision to black-list media entities that aren't part of their "rights holders network" means we always don't learn the truth about situations like the one that happened Tuesday night in York, PA. Even the good things they're doing don't receive the exposure and credit they deserve because they aren't willing to work with ALL members of the media.

Brooks Robinson should be honored in just about whatever manner HE feels comfortable with in Baltimore. One of the reasons why baseball exists in Baltimore is because of him.

There's always been a huge disconnect with the current-day group of folks running the club as it relates to just how the Orioles franchise was built. The people who bought tickets to see Brooks in the 60's and 70's helped keep the team alive long enough for this cash-cow edition of the franchise that exists in 2008.

The powers-that-be at The Warehouse have a job in baseball in Baltimore because of folks like Brooks Robinson.

Someday, maybe they'll realize that and treat their legends with more respect.

Seeing Brooks' comment about not being treated like that very often is one of the saddest things I've read (sports-wise) recently. How cool was it that the York team had B. Robinson on the back of all the jerseys? I'd like to get one of those! Brooks should be treated like that on a regular basis here in Baltimore. Guys my age with kids would love to go to the stadium on a Brooks night. I'd go to Brooks night once a month if they scheduled it. Every good thing the Orioles have done this year, both on and off the field, is now tarnished by this public relations disaster. We've just been painfully reminded who owns the Orioles and who calls the shots.

You will receive no bashing from me but I am sure some idiot will even when this blog is a just cause. Don't feel bad about bashing the Orioles for this (I know you don't and you shouldn't) There have been articles written about Brooks since he had that statue built in his honor also in PA. Also he even spoke about it on WNST. The question was posed to him then and the answer he gave was basically verbatim as you wrote. I don't think he would come on air, paper or any other way and straight bash them for their "efforts" but his close friends and family probably would get the true feelings. I know he still loves the Orioles but probably dislikes somethings that have/are happening. Probably loves them but not "IN love" with them. It's great he received the award and all but I am willing to bet that the presenters were saying to themselves "What the hell are we doing in York,PA when Baltimore is playing a home game?" I am sure they went along with it and bought the story about Brooks being an owner and all but come on. That statue and presentation should have been here. The people in PA know it should have been here. There obviously are some hard feelings with almost all the legends except a few. I believe every retired number should have a statue somewhere around the park. The Orioles have been doing much better business but I would like to see the past acknowledged and the guys I only read and saw video of (I am 28) get their props too...Oh but wait they paid homage to the 79 team that lost and not the first championship team in 66...ummm. Regardless I have been a fan as long I can remember and like anyone else I just want to see a replica of the great teams my Dad told me about. I would give almost anything to be able to go back in time and see those classic and great teams play at Memorial Stadium. I want the Ravens to win the Super Bowl but I would kill to see the Orioles win the World Series in my lifetime. Good Blog and I hope all goes well with the online broadcast because I am bored as hell at work.

Why don't you give them a chance to fix things with Brooks before you beat them up? Oh, that's right, you guys at WNST are the ones who fix the team, right? (DF: Give them a chance to fix things with Brooks? When, in 2020?)

What a sad, sad story.

Brooks being mistreated in Baltimore is akin to Michael Jordan getting mistreated in Chicago.

It just shouldn't happen.

Then again, it is the Orioles we're talking about.

Have a good 4th Drew. Love the show.

As we close in on this patriotic holiday , a holiday where we all are loyal to our country , this simply makes me sick,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Our loyalty and true freedom is what separates us from the rest of the world,,,,,,,,,,,,,,while I agree Peter the Great has the freedom to do whatever he wants to , this is a disgrace to loyalty everywhere , shame on him................Drew , have a great Fourth...............
All is right in the world again, hearing Steve Davis last night bashing the O's after not hearing a word from Drew in the morning had me kind of worried. Steve Davis also bashed the O's pretty hard for honoring the losing World Series team rather than honoring the 66 team or the 83 team on their 25th anniversary this year. God, has it been 25 years since the O's have been in a World Series? To O's Lover: The O's had an opportunity to fix things with Brooks this past Tuesday and blew it. Not only did they blow it, but they probably created an even wider gap now.

I don't know if the "spin detector" went off (need to replace the batteries), but Brooksie owns the team up there. So, why not use his name on his own product? If he owned the Baysox, then he would be presented the award down there. He might be Orioles for life, but he's not chained for life, either. Way to go, Brooks on the award !

Oh come on Drew....OK, the O's continue to step on their own d----. But give it a rest...they are playing some good baseball...enjoy it. You lost your press pass due to one reason and one reason only....Nestor put together FTB and walked out of their stadium! Enjoy the 4th...go home tell your son about the importance of the 4th holiday...chill!

Let's see, if I were a HOF ballplayer who owned a minor league team and was receving a great award why wouldn't I schedule the event at MY BALLPARK to sell more tickets, especially in a struggling economy. This makes perfect business sense and it worked! York had the biggest weekday crowd since opening day (50% above normal). Congrats Brooks on the award and our good business sense!

Re: E-5...O's drop the ball with Brooks By The "Armchair" QB on 7/3/2008 7:52 PM

Great article, Drew! As a native Baltimorean, who grew up watching the exploits of Brooks and Johnny U, among many others, it's more than just sad to see local sports heros treated with disdain - it's reprehensible! But, the current Oriole hierarchy seems headed in the right direction and, in time, may take appropriate steps to "mend some fences" that have been in a state of disrepair for far too long! Truer words were never spoken than your insightful comments that the present ownership, etc., owes it's very existence as well as its rich heritage to the Brooks Robinsons who we were fortunate enough to have pass our way!

Nice to see you do this blog, it followed my question yesterday. I too am disappointed that this was not held here where it belongs. For me Brooks was baseball. I
