Caps Sign Jose Theodore as New Goalie (Updated)

Theodore takes 2 year deal after Huet snubs Caps for Blackhawks *****UPDATED at 715PM after McPhee conference call******

Huet Out; Theodore In as Caps near term Goalie

In a surprising turn of events Cristobal Huet supposedly reneged on a 3 year $15M contract deal with the Caps and has decided to sign with the Chicago Blackhawks. This opened the door for the Caps to sign the next best free agent goalie on the market in Jose Theodore who rediscovered his game in Colorado last season after several years of struggling. Theodore won the Vezina trophy while playing for Montreal in 2002.

Theodore reportedly signed a 2 year deal for $9M. While Theodore recently has not been as good as Huet, the Caps save money and time on this deal and this indicates to me that GM George McPhee fully expects 2006 first round draftee Semen Varlamov to be ready to take over the full time goaltending duties in 2010.

More on today's events later, I hope to catch the conference call with McPhee and Theodore at 5pm.

UPDATED 715PM

Here are some quotes from McPhee from today's afternoon press conference announcing the signings of Theodore and Green today:

"I like where we are right now and we'll keep moving on"

"I'm pleased with Theodore..matched Huet's demands & we requested $3.7M for 3yrs right after the season, we kept getting closer and closer...finally we met his demands for 3yrs at $5M a year then he decided to go the free agency route"

"Jose is excited to come here, he likes our team...we were interested in him last year at the trade deadline but the Avs were not looking to move him."

"With the salary cap, making mistakes on goalie signings can hurt a team really bad"

"For a top 5 goalie it makes sense to try and sign them long term, otherwise it is best to go the short-term route."

On Mike Green: "It is hard to find right handed defensemen, especially ones who can score goals like Mike."

"In the salary cap era every contract you [execute] effects what you do overall."

"We are going to work around the edges here in the next day or so but basically stick with the development of our young team."

Here are my thoughts on the Theodore/Huet develoments:

It seems Huet is all about the money. Yes Chicago has an up and coming team but he will get buried in the Western Conference. Chicago could squeeze in to one of the last playoff spots next year but I don't see them winning a playoff round, as they stand right now. Although signing Brian Campbell will help their team but at $7.1M a year that is a steep price to pay.

I like the Theodore signing because of the terms plus he was the only other legitimate #1 goalie on the market. I saw him play ALOT last year and he was very good on most nights. Colorado was a more wide open team than people think and he played well behind a makeshift defense that suffered alot of injuries down the stretch. He had Calgary's number for most of the season last year. Believe it or not it was after a conversation Theodore had with Kelly Hrudey last season that got Jose's mind right again and on the comeback trail. I mentioned this in one of my past blogs.

I think the Caps have to re-sign Shaone Morrisonn and then I'd like to see them add another defensemen because Brian Pothier sounds done due to injury. I will watch Karl Alzner next week and hope he is the real deal. All reports are that he is so the Caps top four defensemen next season could be Green, Tom Poti, Morrisonn, and Alzner unless McPhee pulls off a coup and gets Brooks Orpik which would really set things up well. Orpik or not, Jeff Schultz is a good #5 defensemen. So it would be nice if John Erskine and Milan Jurcina were bumped to having to fight for the #7 spot. I just don't think they are solid NHL defensemen material.

Heard you on the conference call Ed. Thought McPhee made the right comparison Huet/Theodore= Zubrus/Kozlov. Theodore still has the talent to be a #1 the main question will be moving from Colorado's slow it down 2-1 style to our run and gun 5-4 type games. Hopefully we can sign ShaMo and Orpik along with the development of Alzner Theodore can have a better D corps than Huet did. Overall he's the same as Huet, a guy you can win a Cup with be he won't be the main reason.

You're absolutely right on Erskine. Jurcina at least shows flashes. Alzner is a stud. Best D prospect in the league. Look for the Caps to trade for a D if they can't sign Orpik. Maybe Schneider from Ana. They will use the extra 2.5 mil from Pothier. Morrisson and Laich will get done. Fedorov is still 50/50 I think. shocked that Leonsis is willing to spend to the limit. Must think Pollin is really close to leaving him full control of the Wiz which has turned into a nice moneymaker.

Good move by McPhee to sign Theodore after Huet was dragging his skates. You are right; Chicago & Huet will have a tougher time in Western Conference/ Caps do need another defenseman. Jurcina should be allowed in Verizon only if he buys a ticket and Erskine is a 6th defenseman at best. Orpik would be a good fit and give them a physical presence on the blueline. Alzner will too but there is a learning curve there. And Shultz would be a nice #5.
Federov could be inked this week too. If Nylander and Clark come back healthy, they will have some quality forward depth:

Ovechkin
Backstrom
Semin
Federov
Nylander
Kozlov
Laich
Clark
Bradley
Steckel
Fehr - FA
Fleischman
Brashear

Defenseman:

Green
Poti
Morrisonn -FA
Alzner
Shultz
It’s a shame Huet turned out to be such a tool. On the other hand, if that’s the kind of guy he is, I guess he would have eventually hit some rut along the way and started to play poorly. He was great down the stretch for the Caps, but if I recall, he did have some stretches of poor play with the Habs last year. Maybe his mental makeup was one of the reasons they were willing to let him go so cheaply? I know Theodore has his own issues with consistency, but he's also had many stretchs of solid play. In that regard, Theodore sure seems like a real nice fallback plan. It definitely makes sense not to go to a 4th year for Huet, which had Theodore not been available, McPhee might have had to do, even though he clearly didn’t want to. BTW, I still wonder whether Ollie wouldn’t have been a viable backup – I assume since he signed with Tampa that he still wants to play. Ed, do you think Ollie would have been better than Johnson? I know Johnson is signed, and he is not a bad backup, but it just feels unfortunate that the Ollie era ended the way it did. With all the good things the Caps have done recently, this might be the one thing they deserve some criticism for (unless there is a behind-the-scenes story we have not heard?). Would have nice to get Ollie at least one more run at the Cup, considering what he's meant to this franchise. (Note from Ed: There are 2 sides to every story and I'll have more on the Huet non-signing later. As for Olie, he would not have wanted to be the back-up here so there was no chance for him to stay in that capacity.)

Ed I gotta say Im thrilled with this move, I actually was hoping we would decide to go Theodore instead of pursuing Huet. IMO Theodore + cap space > Huet, and actually Theodore period > Huet. As for defenseman the well is dry on free agent defenseman so possibly sign Federov and send Nylander packing for a defenseman or make some kind of deal for a defenseman.
