Argentina at Brazil (yes, that's soccer!)

An entire continent will stop at 8:45 tonight. I know that sounds trite, but it’s true. A couple of hundred million people will be tuning into a soccer match between the two prides of the South American continent – Brazil and Argentina.

I don’t need to get into the players – inarguably the best in the world and some of the most famous names in the sport – but suffice to say that it’ll be some of the best soccer that the planet can afford, and a World Cup qualifier no less. The atmosphere will be worth the money to order it on Comcast!

Brazil has drilled the Argentines a few times recently, so it’s a grudge match as well.

I have to be honest: I’ve been caught up in soccer mania ever since the Euro Cup began two weeks ago. Every day there have been amazing games and watching France get eliminated against Italy was fun yesterday. And the more I get around town the more I find that more people are watching and supporting soccer on the world stage.

The games this weekend at 2:45 will be crazy good: Netherlands will take on the Russia-Sweden winner on Saturday and Italy will play Spain on Sunday. Both classic!

I’m not an expert – just the opposite, actually. A casual guy who loves sports and thinks it’s amazing to watch these stadiums and these countries come to life on the pitch. It’s fanatical, loud and now in HD most days!

Is anyone else out there awaiting this weekend’s games in Europe or watching the South American qualifiers?

Soccer is one of those things that I think a lot of people watch but don’t talk about.

Well…

I gotta get back to Russia-Sweden!

There has been some great soccer in the Euro. 1. The performance of the Dutch so far has been amazing. Winning yesterday when they had nothing on the line and Romania had everything on the line. 2. Turkey coming back from 2 down with 10 minutes to go was probably as monumental a choke as you will ever see in sports. 3. Thoroughly enjoyed watching the French lose to Italy. I usually don't cheer when a guy goes down, but I couldn't have been happier to see Ribery leave the game. How good a keeper is Buffon? Pretty much single handedly kept Italy alive with great saves.

Any idea what station will be broadcasting Argentina v. Brazil? I don't see it anywhere on my directv listings.

I've enjoyed what I have seen from Euro 2008. The Turkey/Czech Republic match was amazing. I would also recommend seeing USL matches for Crystal Palace (UMBC) and Real Maryland (Md. Soccerplex, Germantown). Both teams have matches that are affordable and have fan bases (if not the teams themselves) with international ties. Crystal Palace is, of course, a "farm team" for the London club of the same name and with that they try to bring some British tradition to their matches. Real Maryland is an expansion team that began this year but their fan base is largely Latino-based with Spanish language radio broadcasts and even serves Peruvian food in thier concession stands. Of course, D.C. United matches are fun, especially with the Barra Brava section.

When will the Soccer geeks realize us Americans would sooner watch the WNBA?? I'm sure there will be a nice nil nil game for everyone to riot over but please stop boring us with this info. And try not to kill any of the players for scoring into their own goal.

Nestor , this Euro2008 has been fantastic,,,,,,,,,,,the creativity has been wonderful,,,,,,,,,,,the play off the ball has been technically advanced,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,The play of the Dutch has been superb , eight very nice teams advancing to the knock-out round , what quality soccer this has been ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,too bad the normal fan from America , not growing up in the soccer enviornment , can't appreciate this level of soccer , it is simply the best ever , enjoy..................
Of course these are amazing games, its the Europeans and I watch them play in their club teams and they are absolutely amazing. I wish more people would watch.

Eric, don't be hating on us "soccer geeks". I, like a lot of people, enjoy a lot of sports, not just baseball, football and college basketball. If you don't want to read blogs about soccer, don't read them, just as I choose not to read about sports that I'm not interested in. No need for the flames, mkay? Besides, I won't tell anyone that you voted for Mike Stankovic over Artie Donovan. lol. JK.
