Bob is Baltimore's best sports talk show host until someone comes and takes his crown. His popularity and his humility are a credit and a reflection of why he does this. Bob goes home, has a beer, eats dinner with his family and watches the ballgame -- just like a lot of us did with our families. He loves Baltimore and he loves Baltimore sports. He IS Baltimore and we love having him on our team. His blog will be a "hot" spot on www.wnst.net!

Halfway there
By Bob Haynie on 9/28/2008 9:45 AM

Prior to the start of the college football season, I made a bet with Rob Long and Ken Zalis that Maryland would win a least eight games in 2008. I must admit, that after the first two weeks of the season, I was slightly concerned that the Terps wouldn’t reach that total.

But, since the loss at MTSU, the Turtles have strung together three straight wins--including two over ranked teams--and are now sitting strong at 4-1.

Yesterday’ ...

Gary gets a verbal
By Bob Haynie on 9/27/2008 6:17 AM

Gary Williams has received his first verbal commitment for the basketball recruiting class of 2009.

Dan Painter of www.terrapintimes.com reported yesterday afternoon that James Padgett has pledged to play basketball for the University of Maryland.

Padgett, a 6’7 center-forward from Lincoln High in Brooklyn, NY., c ...

Offensive line stepping up
By Bob Haynie on 9/23/2008 6:20 AM

I can’t say enough about the early play of the offensive line. Since the return of tackles Jared Gaither and Adam Terry, this group has improved immensely over the last month or so. Gaither’s play has been impressive considering the fact that his work ethic was called into question during training camp.

If this unit continues to play at a consistent level, Joe Flacco’s development as an NFL quarterback will be much smoother than we anticipated.

Mid-week thoughts
By Bob Haynie on 9/17/2008 9:04 PM

Have you noticed that all three pitchers--Matt Albers, Troy Patton and Dennis Sarfate--the Orioles acquired from Houston in the Miguel Tejada trade have had their seasons end due to injury?

It looks like I will be wrong with my pre-season prediction that Daniel Cabrera would win more than 11 games.

I think it’s time the Orioles cut ties with DC. He has been a frustrating player to watch over the years as he teases you into thinking that he could b ...

The Good, the Bad...and the Jinx
By Bob Haynie on 9/7/2008 8:58 PM

The Good:

The Ravens put a physical whuppin’ on the Bengals today that was reminiscent of the great Baltimore defenses of earlier this decade.

Rex Ryan and his crew had Carson Palmer confused and flustered all afternoon long and made the potent Cincinnati offense look like a Pop Warner outfit.

I have said all along that , if healthy, this Ravens defense would return to elite status. Not just good, I mean among the top five in t ...

Maryland's win not well done, but I'll take it
By Bob Haynie on 9/1/2008 6:39 AM

I know Maryland did not blast Delaware the way I thought they would this past Saturday, but it’s a win and I’ll take it.

The Terps, led by Da’Rel Scott, ran the ball extremely well against the Blue Hens. Unfortunately, the passing game was less-than-stellar. Things could change on that front with the possible return of Chris Turner to the starting lineup at QB.

Jordan Steffy is dealing with a badly bruised thumb on his throwing hand and it’s an in ...

See them in Miami?
By Bob Haynie on 8/21/2008 9:44 PM

Are you a college football fan? Not necessarily a Maryland fan, but a fan of the sport of college football.

As you think about that one for a minute, I will let you know that Friday is the day that Todd Helmick, Rob Long and yours truly make our predictions for the upcoming college pigskin season.

All three of us will reveal the teams that we believe will be playing in the BCS National Championship Game on January 8th 2009 i ...

50 millionth blog ( not really )
By Bob Haynie on 8/18/2008 6:59 PM

So much for a football and baseball doubleheader on September 7th. The Orioles have announced that the Sunday game slated to be played after the Ravens-Bengals season opener, has been rescheduled for Saturday the 6th.

The Orioles will now play a day-night DH against the Oakland A’s that Saturday. Tickets dated for the 7th, can now be used for the 1:05 game on the 6th.

Too negative or too honest?
By Bob Haynie on 8/13/2008 9:04 PM

It figures. On a night that Jeremy Guthrie pitches another gem, the Orioles struggle to score runs. After lighting up the scoreboard for the last few games, the Birds are having a relatively quiet night at the plate against the Indians.

As I write this, however, Baltimore is pulling away from Cleveland, leading 5-1 in the top of the ninth inning.

How many of you feel as though sports-talk show hosts should act like cheerleaders for the local teams ...

Making the grade
By Bob Haynie on 7/29/2008 8:44 PM

Keith Cavanaugh of www.terrapintimes.com reported earlier today that prized recruit Sean Mosley has made it thru NCAA Clearinghouse thus making him eligible to play hoops for Gary Williams and the University of Maryland this upcoming season.

Mosley, a 6’4 guard-forward out of St.Frances Academy, was named Baltimore Sun < ...

Prediction time
By Bob Haynie on 7/26/2008 8:28 PM

Tonight is the night that Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto get it on for Cotto’s WBA welterweight championship.

This match-up has the makings of a great, great fight. It features two proud world champions who each possess the ability to administer severe punishment. Each fighter has also shown the capability to absorb a beating and comeback strong with an attack of their own.

The undefeated Cotto is already considered--along with the likes Wilfr ...

That's the guy I remember
By Bob Haynie on 7/23/2008 8:47 PM

It was good to see Mike Flanagan smiling again. Flanagan joined Jim Palmer and Gary Thorne during tonight’s broadcast of the game between the Orioles and Blue Jays and he looked like a man who was actually happy to be there.

He even displayed that dry sense of humor we haven’t heard from him in a long time.

Back before he become Assistant to the VP-GM of baseball operations--or whatever the hell his title was--Flanagan used to come on WNST and tal ...

Pre-sleep blog
By Bob Haynie on 7/21/2008 10:35 PM

It wasn’t pretty, but Radhames Liz got into the sixth inning tonight for manager Dave Trembley as the Orioles beat the Blue Jays 8-3 at Camden Yards. Liz has been terrible of late, so this outing should help his confidence a bit. There is no question that the kid has major league stuff. Hopefully, he can develop the polish needed to become a productive member of the staff for years to come.

Barring injury, Adam Jones will become the greatest center fielder in Orioles ...
